WASHINGTON AND LEE  CHAPEL REESTORATION

Kjellstrom and Lee is tasked with an interior restoration of the Chapel to return it back to its original unadorned design along with separating the auditorium from the statue chamber (which contains the Lee Memorial Statue) will take place during the summer of 2022.  This work will “reflect the original vision for the chapel as an elegant but unadorned space suitable for gatherings of the student body”.  A portion of this work includes erecting a wall between the auditorium and the antechamber outside the statue chamber.  Plaques and portraits that previously graced the walls of the chapel have been removed, relocated, and will be reinstalled in exhibit spaces, including the Chapel Galleries and the University‘s future history museum in order to tell the University's history more completely.  The Valentine statue, Lee’s remains, and the

Lee family crypt will not be moved during this project.  The Chapel is expected to reopen at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year.
